Are Hisense air conditioners the right choice?

Hisense has moved from being a budget alternative to a brand Australians genuinely consider.

Hisense competes on price and on features that usually cost more elsewhere.

The range

Hisense covers all three residential categories:

  • Single room: wall-mounted split systems
  • Multi room: multi-split systems, several indoor units on one outdoor unit
  • Whole home: ducted systems

What you get for the money

HI-NANO air purification Hisense’s air treatment technology, available across much of the range.

Sensitive Choice approval Hisense states that its HI-NANO technology and its ducted air conditioners are approved under the National Asthma Council Australia’s Sensitive Choice program, and describes the ducted approval as the first of its kind in Australia. If air quality is a health issue in your household, treat this as one input and talk to your doctor rather than choosing an appliance on that basis.

Self-Clean Automated cleaning of the indoor coil, which reduces the mould and odour problem that builds up in systems that are never serviced.

ConnectLife app Phone control with geofencing, automatic timers and voice control. It covers all Hisense appliances, so if you already own Hisense televisions or whitegoods they sit in one app.

R32 refrigerant across the range, with a lower global warming potential than the R410A it replaced.

360 degree DC inverter Hisense claims Eco Mode saves up to 30% compared with older models. That is a manufacturer claim measured against its own older equipment, so treat it as a direction rather than a number you will see on your bill. The figure to compare between brands is the star rating on the Zoned Energy Rating Label for your climate zone.

Warranty

Hisense’s standard warranty on its domestic air conditioning is 5 years. Under a promotion it describes as available for a limited time, registering the product online within 6 months of purchase extends that to 7 years. No end date is published (Hisense’s terms, checked 4 Oct 2026).

Because the terms have moved, get the warranty in writing on your quote. Confirm the length, whether it covers parts and labour or parts only, and whether registration is required to get the full term. A 7 year warranty is a genuine advantage over the 5 years offered by most Japanese brands, but only if you actually qualify for it.

What the Government’s energy register shows

The Australian Government’s Energy Rating register lists 68 current Hisense registrations for sale in Australia, as at . Manufacturers have to register every air conditioner sold here with the energy efficiency regulator, along with its tested efficiency.

  • Bedroom size (2.0 to 3.0kW wall split, reverse cycle): the most efficient of 6 rates 7 stars for cooling and 3 for heating in the average climate zone
  • Living area size (6.0 to 8.0kW wall split, reverse cycle): the most efficient of 13 rates 4 stars for cooling and 2.5 for heating

The stars come from the manufacturer’s own tests, submitted to the regulator. They are a fair guide to running cost, not to reliability, and a half-star difference between brands is not worth choosing on. A registration stays listed until it expires, so not every one is still on sale. Check the label for the exact model you are quoted, or look it up on the Energy Rating calculator.

Who Hisense suits

A good fit if:

  • You want the best specification for the money, and the badge matters less to you than the feature list
  • The long warranty appeals, and you will register the product to secure it
  • You already run Hisense appliances and want them in one app
  • You want air purification and self-cleaning without paying premium-brand prices

Look elsewhere if:

  • Resale perception matters to you. Right or wrong, a Daikin or Mitsubishi Heavy Industries badge still carries more weight with buyers
  • You want the deepest independent testing history. Hisense has less of a track record in Australian consumer testing than the long-established Japanese brands
  • You need an unusual indoor unit configuration

Before you buy

  • Get the model number and check the Zoned Energy Rating Label rating for your climate zone. This is where a value brand either justifies itself or does not
  • Get the warranty terms in writing, including whether registration is required
  • Ask your installer whether there is a Hisense service agent in your area. This matters more for a newer brand than an established one
  • Compare your quotes for the same capacity

A reminder about installation only a licensed technician can install an air conditioning system. Anyone installing or servicing a refrigerated air conditioner needs a Refrigerant Handling Licence from the Australian Refrigeration Council. Handling refrigerant without one is an offence. You can check any installer’s licence on the national register at lookforthetick.com.au. Our guide to choosing a reliable installer covers what else to check.
