Are Toshiba air conditioners the right choice?
In short Toshiba’s main draw is its 7 year warranty, alongside quiet inverter operation. Check the warranty terms on your quote, and ask where your nearest Toshiba warranty service agent is.
Toshiba has a genuine claim to significance in this category: it developed the first split system air conditioners with inverter compressors, for commercial use in 1980 and for homes in 1981, a first recognised as an IEEE Milestone. Inverters are now standard on almost every split and ducted system sold in Australia, so that is not a small footnote.
In Australia, Toshiba air conditioners are distributed by AHIC (Australia) Pty Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of AHI Carrier FZC, which is a Carrier Corporation joint venture. Carrier and Toshiba formed their air conditioning joint venture in 1999, and Carrier has held the majority of it since August 2022. The same business distributes Carrier air conditioners here (toshiba-aircon.com.au).
This is worth knowing for a practical reason: your warranty and service relationship is with the Australian distributor, not with Toshiba in Japan. Ask your installer who handles warranty claims and where the nearest service agent is.
The 7 year warranty
This is the headline reason to shortlist Toshiba. Toshiba air conditioning systems carry a 7 year warranty in Australia, which is longer than the 5 years offered by most of the established Japanese and Korean brands. Toshiba states it applies to residential systems bought from Toshiba or a registered Toshiba dealer since 1 May 2020 (Toshiba’s warranty policy, checked 4 Oct 2026).
As with any long warranty, read the terms. Confirm on your quote:
- Whether it covers parts and labour or parts only
- Whether registration is required to get the full term
- Whether it requires documented annual servicing
- Who pays freight if a part goes back
A 7 year parts and labour warranty is a meaningful advantage. A 7 year parts-only warranty with servicing conditions is a different product.
The technology
DC Hybrid Inverter Toshiba combines two compressor control methods and switches between them automatically:
- PAM (Pulse Amplitude Modulation) for high power, used to pull a room to temperature quickly on a very hot or very cold day
- PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) for efficiency, used to hold temperature once it is reached
In plain terms: hard acceleration when you need it, cruise control when you do not. Most inverters do something along these lines. Toshiba’s contribution is switching between two distinct methods rather than varying one.
DC Twin Rotary Compressor Two rollers rotating together, which reduces vibration and friction. The practical benefits are lower noise and better efficiency at part load, which is where a correctly sized system spends most of its life.
What the Government’s energy register shows
The Australian Government’s Energy Rating register lists 179 current Toshiba registrations for sale in Australia, as at . Manufacturers have to register every air conditioner sold here with the energy efficiency regulator, along with its tested efficiency.
- Bedroom size (2.0 to 3.0kW wall split, reverse cycle): the most efficient of 11 rates 4 stars for cooling and 3.5 for heating in the average climate zone
- Living area size (6.0 to 8.0kW wall split, reverse cycle): the most efficient of 12 rates 3.5 stars for cooling and 3 for heating
The stars come from the manufacturer’s own tests, submitted to the regulator. They are a fair guide to running cost, not to reliability, and a half-star difference between brands is not worth choosing on. A registration stays listed until it expires, so not every one is still on sale. Check the label for the exact model you are quoted, or look it up on the Energy Rating calculator.

Who Toshiba suits
A good fit if:
- The 7 year warranty matters to you and the terms stack up
- You want established inverter engineering from the company that introduced it
- Quiet part-load operation is a priority, for example in a bedroom
- You are also getting a Carrier quote, since the same Australian business stands behind both
Look elsewhere if:
- You need the broadest range of indoor unit styles
Before you buy
- Get the model number and the Zoned Energy Rating Label rating for your climate zone
- Get the full 7 year warranty terms in writing, including any servicing conditions
- Ask where the nearest AHI Carrier service agent is
- Compare your quotes for the same capacity
A reminder about installation only a licensed technician can install an air conditioning system. Anyone installing or servicing a refrigerated air conditioner needs a Refrigerant Handling Licence from the Australian Refrigeration Council. Handling refrigerant without one is an offence. You can check any installer’s licence on the national register at lookforthetick.com.au. Our guide to choosing a reliable installer covers what else to check.
